Morocco takes flight toward greener skies with sustainable aviation fuel milestone
Royal Air Maroc and Vivo Energy Maroc have reached a significant milestone in advancing Morocco's aviation sustainability efforts. On February 20, 2025, a Royal Air Maroc Boeing 737 NG completed the first flight between Morocco and Europe powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The flight, numbered AT740, traveled from Marrakech to Paris-Orly, achieving a remarkable reduction in CO2 emissions and reinforcing Morocco's commitment to environmentally responsible aviation.
This landmark flight represents a strategic step forward for Morocco, positioning the country as a leader in adopting alternative fuels in Africa. With the European Union mandating a minimum of 2% SAF in aviation refueling starting this year, Morocco's initiative anticipates these international standards and aligns with the global shift toward decarbonizing air travel.
The use of SAF on this inaugural flight cut CO2 emissions by approximately one-third, equating to a reduction of 10 tons. Derived from renewable materials such as biomass and used cooking oils, SAF can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels. Its compatibility with existing aircraft engines offers a seamless transition without requiring significant technical modifications.
Vivo Energy Maroc, a leading fuel supplier in the country, has further cemented its role as a key player in Morocco's energy transition. The company has been actively promoting renewable energy solutions and sustainable mobility. Matthias de Larminat, CEO of Vivo Energy Maroc, emphasized the importance of this achievement in advancing the decarbonization of the aviation sector.
Royal Air Maroc, for its part, has been ramping up its environmental responsibility initiatives. These include the installation of photovoltaic panels and improved waste management systems, efforts that earned the airline the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) label from the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM). Hamid Addou, CEO of Royal Air Maroc, stated that this first SAF-powered flight between Morocco and Europe underscores the airline's tangible commitment to fostering a more sustainable aviation industry.
Despite this progress, widespread adoption of SAF remains a challenge due to high production costs and limited availability. However, initiatives like this pave the way for gradual integration, supported by technological advancements and regulatory incentives. With the successful Marrakech-Paris flight, Morocco has sent a strong message: it is determined to play a leading role in transforming air travel and establishing Africa as a significant player in sustainable aviation.
