Morocco mobile payments more than double to MAD 3.9 billion
In Casablanca Morocco, mobile payments expanded sharply over the past year as digital financial services gained wider adoption across consumers and businesses. Total transaction value reached MAD 3.9 billion, more than doubling compared with previous levels. The number of operations increased from 9.7 million in 2023 to 19.7 million in 2025, reflecting faster uptake of mobile-based financial tools.
Authorities link this growth to broader shifts in financial behavior and the acceleration of digital transformation in public and private services. Mobile payment systems are now used not only for transactions but also for fraud detection, risk analysis, and automated financial processes. This evolution signals a structural change in how financial services operate across the country.
Global fintech activity continues to expand, with market value estimated above $340 billion and projections suggesting it could exceed $1 trillion by 2030. More than three quarters of consumers worldwide now use at least one form of digital financial service, showing how quickly the sector is reshaping access to banking and payments across regions.
In Morocco, recent policy initiatives have supported this transition. The launch of a national fintech center in January 2025 brought together banks and financial institutions to assist startups through mentoring and regulatory support. This effort forms part of the broader Digital Morocco 2030 strategy aimed at strengthening innovation and expanding the startup ecosystem.
Despite strong momentum, structural challenges remain. Expanding digital infrastructure, improving interoperability between systems, and strengthening cybersecurity frameworks are seen as key priorities. Cloud adoption and evolving user expectations are also pushing institutions to modernize their technical foundations.
At the same time, officials point to significant opportunities in financial inclusion, particularly for unbanked populations and small enterprises. Morocco’s young population and high mobile phone penetration are viewed as key drivers for continued growth, reinforcing ambitions to position the country as a regional hub for fintech and digital innovation.
