Morocco emerges as strategic automotive hub amid South Africa industry challenges
As South Africa’s automotive industry faces growing uncertainty, Morocco is increasingly positioning itself as a strategic industrial hub for global carmakers seeking stability and growth.
Major manufacturers such as Stellantis and Volkswagen are reassessing their investment strategies in southern Africa, where production constraints and shifting market dynamics are raising concerns. Stellantis recently paused a planned factory project in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, initially intended to produce a new pickup model, citing rapid changes in the segment and increased competition.
While the company has not abandoned the project entirely, executives acknowledged that relying on a single vehicle line may not ensure long-term viability. Instead, Stellantis is exploring diversification, including the integration of new-energy vehicles, while strengthening its existing operations in Morocco and across North Africa.
Volkswagen is facing similar pressures. Production levels in South Africa have plateaued, limiting the competitiveness of the local automotive ecosystem. The situation is compounded by heavy dependence on the European market, which accounts for a large share of exports and exposes manufacturers to stricter environmental regulations. Delays in transitioning to electric vehicle production could lead to financial penalties linked to carbon emissions.
Against this backdrop, Morocco is gaining prominence. Its geographic proximity to Europe, stable energy infrastructure, and rapidly evolving industrial ecosystem make it an attractive destination for automotive investment. The country has already integrated itself into global value chains and is now seen as a key platform for supporting the transition to electric mobility.
As the global automotive sector undergoes transformation, Morocco is reinforcing its position as a reliable base for production and export, particularly within the Euro-Mediterranean region.
