Morocco Co-Chairs Crucial Meeting on Global Food Security in Rome

In a pivotal gathering held at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Morocco co-chaired a significant meeting aimed at bolstering collaboration among key United Nations food security agencies. The discussions, led by Youssef Balla, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN agencies in Rome, brought together prominent representatives from the FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Programme (WFP).

This annual meeting, established in 2017, serves as a platform for addressing strategic issues concerning global food security. The focal point of this year’s discussions was the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2023 by the trio of agencies. This MoU is crafted to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of their collective efforts in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2): Zero Hunger.

A notable highlight of the session was the examination of a case study on the Joint Program for the Sahel, exemplifying successful inter-agency collaboration. Participants also reviewed updates on joint humanitarian operations in conflict-ridden regions such as Gaza, Haiti, and Sudan. These efforts underscore the critical importance of unified action in areas severely impacted by conflict and food insecurity.

Additionally, the meeting delved into the role these agencies could play in contributing to the outcomes of the UN Food Systems Summit +2 and other global initiatives aimed at eradicating hunger. Ambassador Balla underscored the necessity for continued cooperation among the UN agencies in tackling global hunger, emphasizing a joint approach rather than attributing blame for the current rise in hunger levels.

The session concluded with a resounding call for ongoing collaboration. Ambassador Balla urged the agencies to maintain their cooperative efforts, particularly in preparation for upcoming global events. His remarks highlighted the indispensable nature of partnership in the endeavor to achieve a world free from hunger.

This meeting signifies a steadfast commitment to strengthening the collaborative framework among UN food agencies, reflecting a unified resolve to address the formidable challenge of global food security.
