Morocco and FAO Lead the Way in Water Conservation and Food Systems Transformation

In a significant move to protect food security and address water scarcity in Morocco and the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, the Moroccan government and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) signed a groundbreaking agreement on April 24, 2024. The accord, signed during a conference on food systems transformation in the historic city of Meknes, marks Morocco's participation in the $31.5 million US Regional Initiative on Water Scarcity. This collaborative project runs from June 2024 to September 2028.

Addressing the critical issues posed by climate change and water scarcity, Mohammed Sadiki, the Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, and Forests, highlighted the urgency of the initiative, stating, "We are at a crucial turning point where strengthening our food systems is imperative. This collaboration with FAO will improve the management and efficiency of water, which is essential for food security in our region."

The Regional Initiative on Water Scarcity aims to be a game-changer by enhancing governance, building resilience in food systems, and implementing innovative water management practices to counter the effects of a rapidly changing climate. Jean Senahoun, the FAO Representative in Morocco, stressed the transformative potential of the project, saying, "This project is not just about finances or technology. It’s a cooperation model that aims to transform agricultural practices by embedding sustainability and innovation at the heart of our food systems."

The agreement demonstrates Morocco's commitment to integrating environmental and climate concerns into its agricultural strategy, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This strategic partnership between Morocco and the FAO underscores the nation's dedication to addressing the interconnections among water scarcity, food security, and climate change.

The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the prestigious Salon International de l'Agriculture de Meknès (SIAM), a prominent agricultural fair held under the auspices of King Mohammed VI. This year’s 16th edition, themed "Climate and Agriculture: Towards Sustainable and Resilient Production Systems," highlights the need for the agricultural sector to adapt to the significant challenges posed by a rapidly changing climate.

SIAM serves as an essential platform for exploring the link between climate variability and agricultural productivity, bringing together a distinguished consortium of national and international experts and scientists to brainstorm innovative solutions. As one of the world’s premier agricultural fairs, SIAM boasts an impressive track record, with over 923,000 visitors in 2023, along with 1,400 exhibitors, 2,000 breeders, and representatives from 70 countries.

With this landmark agreement, Morocco and the FAO have taken a bold step toward forging a resilient future where water conservation and food systems transformation are intertwined, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous agricultural landscape for generations to come.
