Moroccan City Emerges from Water Crisis as Treatment Plant Resumes Operations

The city of Beni Mellal and its surrounding areas in Morocco have recently emerged from a severe water shortage that left residents without access to water in their homes for over five days. The crisis, which caused significant distress among the local population, has now been resolved as water production at the Afourar treatment plant returned to normal levels on Tuesday evening.

The National Office of Electricity and Water (ONEE) announced the restoration of water services, bringing relief to the affected communities. The shortage was triggered by an unexpected increase in sediment levels at the Bin El Ouidane dam, which supplies raw water to the Afourar treatment plant. This surge in sediment was a result of recent rainfall in the Beni Mellal region, which added more than 10 million cubic meters of water to the dam.

The influx of water and subsequent rise in sediment levels forced ONEE to temporarily suspend the water supply from the Afourar station to Beni Mellal. During this period, the city relied on alternative sources, including the Ain Asserdoune treatment plant and underground wells in Sidi Jaber. However, these measures were insufficient to meet the full demand, resulting in a 50% reduction in water supply to Beni Mellal and nearby areas.

The impact of the water shortage on daily life was severe. Social media videos depicted residents struggling with heavy buckets and enduring long waits for water under harsh conditions. Many families were forced to implement strict water rationing, prioritizing drinking and cooking while severely limiting other activities such as bathing and washing.

ONEE's Regional Center for the Water Department explained that the abrupt drop in the dam's water levels had impaired raw water quality, making it challenging to process to the required standards. This situation necessitated the temporary reduction in supply to ensure the safety and quality of the distributed water.

The crisis has highlighted the ongoing water challenges faced by Morocco. In response, the country is developing a range of strategies to address these issues as part of its national program. This initiative follows guidance provided by King Mohammed VI in his 25th Throne Day Speech, underscoring the importance of water security at the highest levels of government.

As Beni Mellal and its neighboring areas recover from this recent water crisis, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vital importance of robust water infrastructure and management systems.
