Legal chief of Goldman Sachs resigns amid renewed scrutiny over Epstein ties
The chief legal officer of Goldman Sachs has announced her resignation following renewed public scrutiny over her past professional relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The Wall Street bank confirmed that Kathryn Ruemmler will step down from her role at the end of June. Her decision comes after newly released documents from the U.S. Department of Justice highlighted previous exchanges between the former attorney and Epstein, reigniting media attention around the matter.
In a statement reported by the Financial Times, Ruemmler explained that she chose to resign to prevent ongoing media coverage related to her earlier career as a private lawyer from distracting the institution. Chief Executive Officer David Solomon said he respected her decision and thanked her for her legal guidance on key issues affecting the bank.
Ruemmler joined Goldman Sachs in 2020 after serving at the law firm Latham & Watkins. Prior to entering the private sector, she held senior positions at the Department of Justice and later served as White House counsel during the administration of Barack Obama.
Her association with Epstein had already been publicly documented in earlier disclosures. However, a new batch of records released by federal authorities intensified scrutiny, particularly after media outlets reported on correspondence between the two that continued years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction.
According to reporting by the Wall Street Journal, Ruemmler was among a small group of individuals contacted by Epstein shortly after his arrest in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. At the time, she was practicing corporate law in the private sector.
Goldman Sachs had previously expressed confidence in its legal chief. Yet analysts and commentators suggested that renewed attention to the case could pose reputational challenges for the bank, making her departure increasingly likely.
The resignation underscores the broader sensitivity surrounding corporate governance and leadership accountability, particularly when past associations risk overshadowing institutional stability in global financial firms.
