Large Pro-Gaza demonstrations take place across Australia
Thousands of Australians took to the streets over the weekend to demonstrate in support of Gaza, amid ongoing tensions following the Israeli military operations in response to the Hamas offensive of October 7, 2023.
According to the Palestine Action Group, more than 40 rallies were held nationwide, with significant participation in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. Organizers estimated around 350,000 people joined the events across the country, including approximately 50,000 in Brisbane, although police put that figure closer to 10,000. Police did not provide official estimates for Sydney or Melbourne.
At the Sydney rally, organizer Josh Lees said Australians mobilized to “demand an end to the genocide in Gaza and urge our government to sanction Israel.” Many participants waved Palestinian flags and chanted “Free Palestine, Free Palestine.”
The demonstrations follow heightened tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, after the Australian government announced its recognition of a Palestinian state.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people also protested in Tel Aviv on Saturday, calling for an end to the war and measures to prevent worsening hunger in the Gaza Strip.
