Kosovo to hold new parliamentary election amid ongoing political deadlock over presidency
Kosovo is set to hold another parliamentary election this Sunday as the country continues to face a prolonged political deadlock over the election of a new president, according to officials.
This will be the third parliamentary election in just 18 months, reflecting ongoing instability within the country’s political system. The vote was triggered after political parties failed to reach an agreement on selecting a new head of state, leaving institutions unable to function effectively.
Kosovo, the youngest country in Europe, has experienced repeated difficulties in forming stable governing coalitions. In recent months, parliament has struggled not only to elect a president but also to secure consensus on key leadership positions, contributing to a broader institutional paralysis.
The ruling party led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti is widely expected to perform strongly in the election, although analysts suggest it may fall short of achieving the majority needed to resolve the presidency issue independently.
Despite internal political challenges, Kosovo continues to pursue its long-term ambition of joining the European Union. However, repeated elections and institutional deadlocks have raised concerns about governance stability and reform progress.
The upcoming vote is seen as a critical test of the country’s political direction and its ability to overcome persistent divisions within its parliamentary system.
