Kidnapped Nigerian retired major general dies in terrorist captivity

A retired Nigerian army major general, Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar (rtd), has died while being held in captivity after being kidnapped by armed terrorists in northwestern Nigeria, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Katsina State, a region that has experienced repeated attacks and kidnappings in recent years linked to armed groups operating across rural and forested areas. The retired senior officer was abducted alongside his wife on May 31 while traveling along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road near Zakin Baure village in Matazu Local Government Area.

According to state authorities, the retired general died due to complications related to diabetes and hypertension while still in the custody of his abductors. Officials stated that security agencies and local authorities had made extensive efforts to secure his release, but the situation ended in tragedy.

During the attack, the family’s driver reportedly managed to escape despite sustaining gunshot injuries. The kidnappers later released a video showing the retired general and his wife in captivity, in which they demanded the release of detained associates and the return of confiscated livestock.

Before his death, authorities had indicated that rescue operations were at an advanced stage and had expressed cautious optimism that the hostages might soon be freed. However, the outcome highlights the persistent security challenges facing parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom and militant activity remain widespread.

The government has not yet released further details regarding the ongoing efforts to secure the release of the deceased officer’s wife, who remains in captivity.

Security analysts continue to warn that coordinated action is needed to address the underlying causes of insecurity in the region, including armed banditry, weak rural security presence, and cross-border criminal networks.
