Kazakhstan’s ruling party announces merger ahead of key parliamentary elections
Kazakhstan’s political landscape is undergoing another significant transformation as the country’s ruling party, Amanat, announced its merger with the newly established Adilet ("Justice") party ahead of parliamentary elections expected in August.
The decision was unveiled during a party congress in Astana and marks a notable development in the ongoing restructuring of Kazakhstan’s political system. Amanat has been the dominant political force in the country for more than two decades, consistently securing large parliamentary majorities since its creation in 1999.
The merger comes at a time when President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is pursuing a broad agenda of political and institutional reforms. Analysts view the move as part of a wider effort to reshape the political environment and prepare the country for a future transition of power. Under current constitutional provisions, Tokayev’s presidential term is scheduled to end in 2029.
Kazakhstan, the largest economy in Central Asia and a major producer of oil and natural gas, has recently introduced several constitutional and governance reforms aimed at modernizing state institutions. Supporters of these measures argue that they strengthen political stability, while critics continue to call for greater political competition and broader representation.
The newly formed Adilet party is widely regarded as being closely aligned with President Tokayev and includes several figures from his political circle. By integrating Amanat into Adilet, the government appears to be consolidating political support ahead of the upcoming parliamentary vote.
Political observers will closely watch the August elections, which could provide further insight into the direction of Kazakhstan’s reforms and the evolution of its political system in the years leading up to the next presidential transition.
