Jinane Zouaki: First Moroccan Woman Inducted into Ibero-American Academy of Pharmacy

Moroccan biologist Jinane Zouaki has been named an academic corresponding member of the prestigious Ibero-American Academy of Pharmacy, marking a historic milestone for Morocco, the Arab world, and Africa. She is the first Moroccan, Arab, and African woman to hold this honor.

The official induction ceremony took place at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Granada, Spain, on Tuesday, bringing together leading scientists from Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and Morocco. Zouaki’s appointment highlights Morocco’s growing influence on the global scientific stage.

Celebrating pharmacy’s legacy and Morocco's progress

In her address to the academy, Zouaki reflected on the historical evolution of pharmacy in Morocco and the nation’s recent strides toward achieving health sovereignty under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. She emphasized that these efforts have transformed Morocco into a competitive industrial hub in the regional and international healthcare sectors.

Speaking to Morocco’s state news agency MAP, Zouaki expressed deep pride in joining the academy, describing the recognition as a personal and national achievement. "This honor reflects the strength of Moroccan women and showcases Morocco's scientific advancement globally," she said.

A legacy of scientific excellence

Zouaki’s career is marked by groundbreaking achievements. Originally from Tetouan, she holds a doctorate in pharmacy and has dedicated herself to education and biomedical research. In 2022, she became the first Moroccan and African to receive the prestigious Medal of Privilege from the University of Granada, underscoring her exceptional contributions to science.

She also made history in 2023 as the first Moroccan to join the Royal Academy of Pharmacy in Catalonia.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zouaki volunteered alongside medical teams, using her expertise at her molecular biology lab in Tetouan’s Saniat Rmel Hospital to conduct COVID-19 testing and train healthcare workers. Her contributions during the crisis demonstrated her commitment to public health and scientific progress.

A role model for the future

Zouaki’s induction into the Ibero-American Academy of Pharmacy not only honors her individual achievements but also highlights Morocco's growing role in international science and research. Her story inspires women in Morocco and beyond to pursue careers in science and medicine, breaking barriers and contributing to global progress.
