Japan airlines cancel flights as blizzards strike the northwest coast
Japan’s major airlines have cancelled dozens of flights after severe winter weather hit the country’s northwestern coast, bringing strong winds and heavy snowfall to several regions, including popular ski destinations.
On Tuesday, ANA Holdings announced the cancellation of more than 50 domestic flights, disrupting travel plans for nearly 4,000 passengers. Japan Airlines also reported multiple cancellations, affecting over 2,000 travelers as adverse weather conditions continued to impact airport operations.
The most significant disruptions were recorded at New Chitose Airport near Sapporo, located in Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido. The airport serves as a key access point to renowned ski resorts such as Niseko, which has become increasingly attractive to international visitors seeking high-quality powder snow and benefiting from Japan’s weak yen.
Although no further cancellations were planned for the following day, airlines warned that delays could persist at several airports if weather conditions failed to improve.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for heavy snowfall across northern and western regions along the Sea of Japan over the coming days. Authorities have advised residents and travelers to avoid non-essential travel and to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
The blizzards highlight the seasonal challenges faced by Japan’s transport sector during winter, particularly in regions heavily dependent on tourism and air connectivity.
