Italy expresses solidarity with Türkiye after missile fired from Iran
Italy has expressed solidarity with Türkiye after a ballistic missile fired from Iran briefly entered Turkish airspace before being intercepted by defense systems.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in Rome that Italy stands alongside Türkiye and shares the concerns of the Turkish people following the incident. He stressed the importance of maintaining calm and pursuing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation in an already tense regional environment.
According to the Turkish Ministry of National Defense, the missile was neutralized by NATO air and missile defense systems deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean. Some fragments from the intercepted projectile reportedly fell in a vacant area in the province of Gaziantep, but authorities confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries.
Tajani emphasized that the current situation requires extreme caution and careful political judgment. While reaffirming Italy’s support for its NATO ally, he noted that invoking NATO Article 5 — which obliges alliance members to defend one another in case of attack — is not considered necessary at this stage.
The Italian government also confirmed that diplomatic channels with Iran remain open. Italian officials say they are working with international partners to ease tensions and encourage dialogue in order to avoid a broader regional conflict.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following ongoing military operations involving the United States and Israel against targets in Iran since late February. According to various reports, the escalation has already resulted in significant casualties and increased instability across the region.
In response to these developments, Tehran has reportedly carried out a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and several neighboring countries hosting United States military facilities, further raising concerns about the risk of a wider confrontation.
European leaders have repeatedly called for restraint and diplomacy, warning that further escalation could threaten regional stability and international security.
