Iran executes man for attack on security forces during 2022 protests
Iranian authorities executed Mehran Bahramian on Saturday for attacking security forces during the 2022 nationwide protests, according to the judiciary. The attack, which occurred in Semirom, Isfahan province, killed security officer Mohsen Rezaei and injured others.
Bahramian was convicted by the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan and his sentence confirmed by the Supreme Court. The judiciary reported that he was found guilty of moharebeh, or “waging war against God,” for firing at a security vehicle and inciting attacks on government property and personnel.
The protests began in 2022 following the death in detention of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, sparking nationwide demonstrations. Hundreds were killed, including security personnel, and thousands were arrested. Since then, several detainees from the protests have been executed.
In June, Abbas Kurkuri was hanged for killing seven people during the same demonstrations. Iran ranks second in the world for executions, after China, according to human rights organizations including Amnesty International.
