Policeman killed and six injured in suicide attack in Northwestern Pakistan

A police officer was killed and six others were wounded on Monday after a suicide bomber targeted a security patrol in northwestern Pakistan, authorities confirmed. The attack occurred in the Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region bordering Afghanistan that has experienced a resurgence in militant violence in recent years.

Police spokesperson Asif Hassan reported that the attacker detonated explosives near a security vehicle, while a second suspect fled the scene. The incident adds to a series of suicide assaults that have struck the area in recent months.

The bombing followed a separate security operation on Sunday in the Noukandi and Mastung districts of Balochistan province, where forces said they foiled planned attacks and killed several militants. The two regions, like much of the country’s west, have grappled with recurring threats from armed groups.

Lakki Marwat, alongside nearby Bannu and North Waziristan, has been among the hardest-hit districts, with frequent attacks targeting both police and military personnel.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement condemning Monday’s blast and expressing condolences to the family of the slain officer. He also praised the injured personnel for their service.

According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, civilian deaths from terrorist incidents rose by 80% this year, even as casualties among security forces declined by 65%. The think tank’s latest monthly report noted that 292 people were killed and 164 injured nationwide in militant violence and counterterrorism operations in November.
