India approves purchase of new air defense missiles from Russia
India has approved a major defense acquisition plan that includes the purchase of new air defense missile systems from Russia, signaling a continued strategic partnership between the two countries despite mounting geopolitical pressure.
According to official sources, the Indian Ministry of Defense authorized a broad procurement package valued at approximately $25 billion. The deal covers a range of military equipment, including drones, transport aircraft, and additional units of the Russian-made S-400 air defense system.
In a statement, the ministry explained that the S-400 systems are designed to counter long-range threats targeting critical infrastructure and strategic zones. The acquisition had already been under discussion during recent high-level diplomatic engagements between New Delhi and Moscow.
India has made military modernization a top priority in recent years, driven largely by ongoing tensions with neighboring China and Pakistan. As one of the world’s largest arms importers, the country has historically relied on Russia as its primary supplier.
However, New Delhi has gradually diversified its defense partnerships, strengthening ties with countries such as the United States, France, and Israel. Just last month, India announced plans to acquire additional French-built Rafale fighter jets, expanding an already significant fleet.
The decision to proceed with Russian defense systems comes amid complex relations with Washington. The United States has repeatedly expressed concern over India’s continued defense and energy ties with Moscow.
Last year, Washington imposed tariffs on certain Indian exports as a response to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil, which U.S. officials argue contributes to ongoing global conflicts. These measures were temporarily suspended in March due to shifting global energy dynamics linked to tensions in the Middle East.
India’s latest move highlights its effort to maintain strategic autonomy while balancing relationships with major global powers in an increasingly polarized international landscape.
