In Colombia's Caribbean, neighboring towns back opposing presidential candidates
On Colombia’s northern Caribbean coast, two neighboring municipalities are heading toward the presidential runoff with sharply divided political preferences, reflecting broader national tensions over security, inequality, and social reform.
In the towns of Tubara and Juan de Acosta, located near the coastal city of Barranquilla, daily life appears similar at first glance. Both communities feature modest homes, central squares where residents gather in the evening, and streets shaded by mango trees. However, their political choices ahead of the June 21 runoff reveal contrasting priorities shaped by local realities.
In Juan de Acosta, residents have been increasingly affected by insecurity linked to drug trafficking routes along the coastline. Reports of rising extortion and violent crime have strengthened support for the right-wing candidate Abelardo De La Espriella, who won about 55% of the vote in the first round. His campaign focuses on restoring order through a tougher stance on armed groups and criminal organizations.
Just a short distance away, Tubara has taken a different political direction. There, voters strongly supported left-wing senator Ivan Cepeda, who received nearly 60% of the local vote in the first round. His platform, centered on expanding social programs, improving healthcare access, and strengthening pensions and education, has resonated with residents concerned about inequality and public services.
Experts note that both campaigns now face the challenge of increasing voter turnout in the decisive second round, where participation could determine the final outcome in a closely divided electorate.
The contrast between these two towns highlights how neighboring communities can interpret the same national issues through very different lenses, influenced by local security conditions and social needs.
