Husband of Italian minister missing after incident in Lake Vico, search underway

A search operation is underway in central Italy after the husband of Italian Family Minister Eugenia Roccella went missing following an incident on Lake Vico, north of Rome, according to local reports and authorities.

The incident occurred on Saturday, June 27, during a boating outing on the lake, located in the province of Viterbo. The man reportedly entered the water for a swim but failed to resurface.

According to initial accounts reported by Italian media, including Corriere della Sera, the situation may have been triggered by a sudden medical episode, which could have prevented him from returning to the surface. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the disappearance.

Minister Eugenia Roccella, who serves in Italy’s government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, was present on the boat at the time of the incident. She is reported to have raised the alarm after realizing her husband had not returned, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Search and rescue teams were deployed to the area shortly after the alert, with operations focusing on the lake and surrounding waters. Officials have not released further details regarding the progress of the search or the condition of the missing man.

Lake Vico, a volcanic lake in the Lazio region, is a popular recreational area but can present sudden depth changes and underwater currents that may complicate swimming and rescue efforts.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to determine the circumstances of the disappearance. No official conclusions have been announced, and rescue operations remain ongoing.
