Houthis strike two ships after Red Sea navigation ban
The Houthi movement in Yemen announced a full ban on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea, escalating tensions across one of the world’s most strategic shipping corridors. The declaration came alongside immediate missile attacks on commercial vessels operating in the Gulf of Aden, marking a rapid intensification of maritime insecurity in the region.
A Houthi military spokesperson stated that Israeli-linked maritime traffic would be treated as legitimate military targets from the moment of the announcement. The group framed the decision as part of a broader escalation strategy, signaling that further measures could follow. The statement expanded the scope of risk for commercial operators transiting the Red Sea and nearby waterways.
Within hours of the announcement, missiles struck two merchant vessels. The first, a Liberia-flagged container ship, was hit by a ballistic missile in the Gulf of Aden. The second, a German-operated cargo vessel, was struck by both a ballistic and a cruise missile. Both ships sustained damage but continued sailing, and no injuries were reported among their crews.
Military authorities in the United States confirmed the incidents and reported additional operations targeting Houthi-controlled military assets in Yemen. These included the destruction of drones and missile systems used in recent attacks. The exchanges underline a widening cycle of strikes and counterstrikes involving regional and international actors operating in and around the Red Sea corridor.
The escalation carries significant implications for global energy and trade flows. Key maritime routes near Bab el-Mandeb remain critical for oil shipments moving from the Middle East toward Asia. With heightened risks, shipping companies face increased insurance costs and route disruptions, adding pressure to already strained global supply chains.
