Houthis declare total ban on Israeli Red Sea navigation

The Houthi movement in Yemen announced a sweeping prohibition on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea, escalating tensions in an already volatile regional environment. The group stated that any vessel linked to Israel operating in the area would be treated as a military target. The declaration comes amid heightened military exchanges between Israel and Iran that have widened concerns over a broader regional confrontation.

The announcement was delivered by the Houthi military spokesperson, who said the decision established a full blockade on Israeli-linked shipping through one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors. The group also claimed responsibility for missile operations targeting locations described as sensitive sites in the Jaffa area. It said the strikes achieved their intended objectives and signaled an escalation in its operational posture.

The Houthis framed their actions as part of a wider regional confrontation involving multiple states and aligned armed groups. They stated that their military response would intensify in line with developments in what they described as a broader conflict involving Israel, Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen. The rhetoric marks a continuation of the group’s strategy of linking Red Sea operations to wider Middle Eastern conflicts.

The escalation raises new risks for global maritime traffic through the Bab el Mandeb strait, a chokepoint through which a significant share of international trade flows. The corridor connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and remains critical for shipping routes toward the Suez Canal. Previous waves of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels disrupted global supply chains and forced shipping companies to reroute or raise insurance costs. Analysts warn that renewed threats could again destabilize maritime logistics at a time of heightened geopolitical friction across the region.
