Greece moves toward deal to purchase Italian-made frigates
Greece is moving forward with plans to strengthen its naval capabilities through the potential acquisition of advanced frigates built in Italy. Greek officials hope negotiations could be finalized by April, according to statements from Defence Minister Nikos Dendias.
The proposed agreement involves the purchase of Bergamini-class frigates, part of the FREMM (European multi-mission frigate) program. These modern warships are designed for a wide range of operations, including anti-submarine warfare, air defense, and maritime security missions.
Discussions between the two countries intensified after senior officials signed cooperation agreements last year aimed at expanding defense and naval collaboration. The framework opens the door for Greece to acquire two frigates initially, with an option to purchase two additional vessels at a later stage.
Speaking to a Greek newspaper, Dendias expressed optimism that negotiations could be completed within the coming weeks. If finalized, the agreement would represent a significant step in Athens’ strategy to modernize its naval fleet and enhance security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Defense analysts note that the acquisition would strengthen Greece’s maritime capabilities at a time when regional tensions and strategic competition in the Mediterranean continue to shape defense priorities.
