Giant Sinkhole Swallows truck in Mexico city, Residents evacuated

A giant sinkhole opened up in a street in the Iztapalapa district of Mexico City on Saturday, September 13, swallowing a truck carrying soft drinks, according to NMás. The sinkhole, approximately 10 meters deep, required a crane to remove the vehicle.

The incident was caused by the rupture of an aging pipeline, weakened by soil subsidence. Heavy rainfall over the weekend—20.25 mm in just 20 minutes—further softened the ground and expanded the hole.

Authorities evacuated 20 residents from three nearby houses as a precaution, and the area was cordoned off. The damaged pipeline, more than 2 meters in diameter, now needs urgent repairs.

This sinkhole is the latest in a series of incidents in Iztapalapa. In 2025 alone, 159 sinkholes have been reported in the district, highlighting ongoing infrastructure challenges in the capital. Residents are urged to avoid approaching the area until repairs are completed.
