Gas cylinder distributors announce temporary suspension in Morocco
Gas cylinder distributors in Morocco have announced a temporary suspension of their delivery operations on April 21 and 22, citing worsening economic conditions and declining profit margins.
The decision was confirmed by Mohamed Benjelloun, head of the Association of Gas Cylinder Depositaries and Distributors. He stated that delivery rounds will be halted during the two-day period, although storage depots will remain open for direct customer purchases, depending on available stock.
Industry professionals say the move is intended as a protest against financial pressures that have intensified over recent years. They argue that their compensation framework has not been significantly revised since 2016, despite rising operational costs and changing economic conditions.
Distributors point to multiple factors affecting their profitability, including higher fuel prices, maintenance costs for delivery vehicles, spare parts, wages, taxes, and social contributions. The increase in diesel prices has been particularly impactful, given its central role in transportation and logistics.
The sector has also been affected by the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted economic activity and added strain to already tight margins.
According to industry representatives, repeated appeals to authorities have not resulted in concrete solutions. As a result, the temporary suspension is being presented as a last resort to draw attention to their situation and push for meaningful dialogue.
If the disruption extends beyond the announced dates, it could affect several sectors that rely heavily on butane gas, including restaurants and service industries. Observers warn that prolonged supply interruptions may increase pressure on public authorities to ensure continuity of this essential service.
