Franco-German parliament urges cooperation on Future Air Defence System

The Franco-German Parliamentary Assembly has called for continued collaboration on the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), emphasizing the need for Europe to develop and procure advanced military technologies jointly. The appeal comes ahead of a joint meeting scheduled for Monday, despite ongoing disagreements over project management.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government stated that key decisions on the FCAS program, which is intended to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon by 2040, will be made by the end of the year. Germany insists that French aerospace firm Dassault adhere to existing agreements, under which Dassault, Airbus Deutschland, and Spain’s Indra each hold a third of the project. Dassault has reportedly requested an 80% stake, a proposal rejected by Germany.

The FCAS is designed to operate alongside drones and involves Spain, which joined the initiative in 2019. Total program costs are estimated to run into the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Recent reports indicate that France and Germany could reconsider the project, possibly shifting focus toward a military “cloud” system, which would integrate data and command platforms for aircraft, autonomous systems, and sensors.
