France seizes Russian oil tanker in Mediterranean, says Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the French Navy intercepted a Russian oil tanker in the Mediterranean on Thursday. The vessel, suspected of being part of the so-called “ghost fleet” that funds Russia’s war against Ukraine, was allegedly flying a false flag and is subject to international sanctions.
The operation was carried out “with the cooperation of several allies,” including the United Kingdom, according to Macron. The tanker, named Grinch in the UK sanctions list and Carl in EU and US lists, was traveling from Murmansk in the Barents Sea and was intercepted in international waters between Spain and North Africa.
The French naval prefecture confirmed that the vessel was escorted to a designated anchorage for further verification. Authorities verified the ship’s documentation, confirming irregularities with its flag, and referred the matter to the Marseille prosecutor. Macron emphasized that the operation was conducted in strict accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, underscoring France’s commitment to enforcing international law and sanctions.
