France expands emergency fuel aid scheme for road transport companies

The French government has introduced a second round of exceptional financial assistance for road transport companies, broadening access to support as businesses continue to face pressure from elevated fuel costs.

The new scheme, established through a decree published in the Official Journal, will take effect on 5 July and expands eligibility for companies operating in the road transport sector.

Wider access to financial support

The programme targets the same categories of operators covered by the initial aid package introduced in April.

Eligible beneficiaries include public road freight transport companies, coach passenger transport operators and non-taxi medical transport providers.

Businesses can receive grants of up to €60,000, with the amount determined according to the type of vehicle operated. Fixed payments range from €70 per ambulance to €500 for certain freight vehicles.

Revised eligibility criteria

The main change introduced by the new decree concerns the conditions for obtaining larger grants.

According to France's Ministry of Transport, the eligibility criteria for applications exceeding €5,000 have been revised to better address the needs of the most financially vulnerable transport companies.

The ministry said the adjustments are intended to ensure that businesses facing the greatest economic challenges can more easily access government support.

Response to rising operating costs

The expanded aid programme reflects ongoing efforts by French authorities to help transport operators manage the impact of higher fuel prices, which continue to increase operating expenses across the logistics, passenger transport and healthcare transport sectors.

By widening access to the scheme while maintaining the existing funding levels, the government aims to provide additional financial relief for companies whose profitability has been affected by sustained increases in energy costs.

The revised programme is expected to benefit a broader range of eligible transport businesses when applications open following its entry into force on Sunday.
