France confronts Algeria’s hostility amid Europe’s passivity

Franz-Olivier Giesbert, in a recent article published in Le Point, has criticized Algeria’s repeated provocations and hostile attitude toward France, despite the substantial aid and diplomatic goodwill extended by the latter. Giesbert’s remarks underscore the strained relations between Paris and Algiers, highlighting a complex dynamic that has seen France provide significant financial support to Algeria while receiving antagonistic responses in return.

Between 2017 and 2022, France allocated EUR 842 million in public development aid to Algeria. This financial generosity stands in stark contrast to Algeria’s substantial hydrocarbon revenues, which can reach up to USD 50 billion annually during peak periods. The disparity raises questions about the effectiveness of France’s aid and the motivations behind Algeria’s hostile stance.

Giesbert also drew attention to troubling trends, including the moral persecution of Boualem Sansal, a writer of Algerian origin who gained French citizenship. Additionally, he noted the hate campaigns propagated by Algerian influencers based in France, encouraged by remarks from individuals close to Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. These influencers are pushing for the radicalization of the Algerian diaspora under the banner of a modern-day “moudjahidism,” adding another layer of complexity to the already tense relationship.

Expanding his analysis, Giesbert criticized the European Union’s broader inaction in the face of aggressive foreign ambitions. He cited examples such as Turkey’s targeted assassinations of Kurds in Paris, Russia’s growing influence in Slovakia and Moldova, and the United States’ interest in acquiring Greenland for its rare earth resources. Meanwhile, China also eyes the strategic value of the island, yet Europe fails to respond decisively.

For Giesbert, this European passivity invites further humiliation and exploitation. He called on EU institutions to take a stand, noting that “weakness stirs greed, and apathy invites humiliation.” He warns that Europe must act swiftly to reclaim its sovereignty and dignity before it is too late.

The article highlights the urgent need for Europe to address these challenges proactively, rather than allowing external pressures to dictate its future. Giesbert’s critique serves as a wake-up call for European policymakers to reassess their strategies and take decisive action to safeguard the continent’s interests in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
