Fabien Roussel re-elected as French Communist Party leader with 70% support

Fabien Roussel has been re-elected as national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), securing 70.1% of the vote at the party's congress in Lille.

The result was widely expected and strengthens Roussel's position as the party prepares for France's 2027 presidential election.

Strong mandate from party members

Delegates endorsed Roussel's leadership during the final day of the PCF congress, giving the mayor of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux a renewed mandate to lead the party.

His re-election follows months of internal discussions over the party's political strategy and its role within France's broader left-wing movement.

Presidential ambitions take shape

The vote is viewed as an important step toward a possible presidential campaign in 2027.

Earlier this year, Roussel said he was promoting a platform aimed at breaking with the policies of President Emmanuel Macron while seeking to unite a broad coalition of voters.

Despite his 2.28% result in the 2022 presidential election, Communist Party members have already decided that the PCF will field its own candidate in 2027 rather than participate in a left-wing primary.

Left remains divided ahead of 2027

The decision reflects ongoing differences within France's left, particularly with La France Insoumise, whose leaders have argued that multiple candidacies could weaken the opposition vote.

By confirming Roussel's leadership and backing an independent presidential bid, the Communist Party has signaled its intention to maintain a distinct political identity as preparations for the next national election gather pace.
