European defense stocks surge amid Greenland tensions
European defense stocks climbed for a fourth straight session on Wednesday, fueled by geopolitical ripples from the U.S. military's capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and escalating friction over Greenland. A Bloomberg index tracking European defense firms has surged about 10 percent since the start of 2026, while the Stoxx Europe Aerospace & Defense index jumped 3 percent on January 7 alone.
Denmark unveiled plans to spend 88 billion Danish kroner roughly $13.8 billion to bolster Greenland's defenses, citing a "serious security situation." Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen made the announcement amid repeated claims by President Donald Trump that the U.S. needs Greenland for national security reasons. The White House has reiterated that military options to acquire the Danish autonomous territory remain on the table.
French defense giant Thales led the Stoxx 600 with an 8.3 percent gain on Wednesday, followed by Italian arms maker Leonardo up 5.1 percent. Germany's Rheinmetall rose 4.9 percent, Sweden's Saab advanced around 5 percent to a record high, and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri gained over 4 percent earlier in the week. The rally gained steam after Operation Absolute Resolve, the U.S. military action on January 3 that resulted in Maduro's capture and detention. Analysts say this bold move, paired with Trump's assertive foreign policy, has spotlighted European defense spending.
Goldman Sachs analysts hold optimistic outlooks for the sector, pointing to ongoing government budget increases. Bernstein forecasts 9 percent revenue growth for 2026, with Rheinmetall's sales accelerating 40 percent, highlighting Rheinmetall, Thales, and Leonardo for the strongest upside potential. "Whether there's a ceasefire or not, spending remains necessary," Bernstein analysts noted, emphasizing robust order books and rising budgets. Morningstar's chief equity strategist Michael Field named Rheinmetall among top European investment picks for 2026.
