European defense stocks fall as Ukraine peace hopes lift builders
European defense stocks dropped sharply on Friday after Ukraine’s chief negotiator signaled progress toward a potential peace deal with Russia, prompting investors to shift toward construction and materials companies expected to benefit from postwar rebuilding.
Kyrylo Budanov said in an interview reported by Bloomberg that talks with Moscow are moving toward a resolution. He said both sides recognize the need to end the war and suggested an agreement could come sooner than expected.
The comments triggered a selloff across major European defense firms. Czechoslovak Group fell about 9.7%, while Rheinmetall dropped roughly 5.7%. Leonardo declined around 5%, and Hensoldt and BAE Systems each lost close to 2.7%.
The sector had already been under pressure. A March report from Bloomberg showed Rheinmetall down about 20% from its peak, while a broader index of European defense stocks has stagnated since mid January. Friday’s move highlights how sensitive the sector remains to signs of diplomatic progress, despite ongoing commitments by NATO countries to sustain higher military spending.
At the same time, investors rotated into companies tied to reconstruction. Buzzi, Holcim, and Heidelberg Materials rose between 4.3% and 4.8% as markets priced in potential rebuilding demand in Ukraine. Estimates suggest reconstruction costs could reach up to $800 billion over the next decade.
Some analysts urged caution on expectations of a near term breakthrough. Research firm Vital Knowledge said the remarks do not point to concrete new developments and reflect broader limits on Russia’s ability to sustain the conflict rather than imminent agreement.
Volodymyr Zelensky has taken a more cautious tone in recent statements, while reports indicate Ukraine continues to hold strong positions on the battlefield, reducing the likelihood of a quick settlement.
Budanov acknowledged that both sides still maintain maximalist positions but said there is now clearer understanding of acceptable outcomes. He added that no final decision has been reached.
In a parallel development, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a temporary Easter ceasefire, with Moscow ordering a pause in military operations from Saturday afternoon through Sunday midnight.
