End-of-life bill sparks controversy in France as critics denounce “loss of humanity”

A group of French lawyers, doctors and academics has strongly criticized the country’s proposed assisted dying legislation, arguing that the debate surrounding the bill reflects a troubling shift in attitudes toward life, death and medical ethics.

In a column published in Le Journal du Dimanche, around thirty public figures, including François-Xavier Bellamy, a European Parliament member and vice-president of The Republicans (LR) party, condemned what they described as a loss of “humanity, ethics and the sense of the sacred” in discussions over the legislation.

Controversy over planned parliamentary celebration

The criticism followed a controversy surrounding a planned reception organized by Laurent Panifous, Minister for Relations with Parliament, to mark the expected final adoption of the bill by the French National Assembly.

The event, initially scheduled for July 15 at the Hôtel de Clermont, was intended as an opportunity to discuss the nearly four-year process that led to the development of the legislation, according to the minister.

However, the wording used in the invitation, including references to a “celebration” and a “cocktail,” sparked criticism from opponents of the reform. The Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE) later acknowledged communication mistakes linked to those terms, and the event was postponed.

Debate over assisted dying intensifies

The signatories of the opinion piece argued that celebrating the adoption of legislation allowing assisted death was inappropriate, particularly while access to palliative care remains insufficient.

They cited concerns that improving end-of-life support services should take priority over expanding access to medical assistance in dying, pointing to existing inequalities in access to palliative care across France.

The controversy highlights the deep divisions surrounding the issue, which has become one of the most sensitive ethical debates in French politics.

Parliament approaches historic vote

The proposed law on active assistance in dying is expected to receive final parliamentary approval, potentially introducing a major change in French medical and legal practice.

The legislation would allow assisted suicide, and in certain circumstances euthanasia, under a strict set of conditions.

The bill has already faced significant opposition in the French Senate, where it was rejected three times. Senate President Gérard Larcher has said he would consider referring the legislation to the Constitutional Council if the government allows the National Assembly to have the final say.

A defining ethical debate for France

Supporters of the reform argue that it responds to requests from patients seeking greater control over the final stages of life, while opponents warn of risks involving vulnerable people and the broader meaning of medical care.

As France approaches a decisive parliamentary vote, the assisted dying bill continues to expose profound disagreements over dignity, autonomy and the role of society in decisions surrounding the end of life.
