Easyjet warns of rising losses amid fuel surge and legal costs
British low-cost airline easyJet has issued a warning over a significantly higher loss for the first half of the year, reflecting mounting pressures from rising fuel prices and increased legal expenses.
The carrier estimates a headline pre-tax loss ranging between £540 million and £560 million, a notable increase compared to approximately £394 million recorded during the same period last year. The outlook highlights the growing financial strain facing airlines as global economic and geopolitical factors disrupt operations.
A key driver behind the surge in costs is the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East, particularly linked to the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. This situation has contributed to a sharp increase in jet fuel prices, which have reportedly risen dramatically in recent weeks. As fuel remains one of the largest operational expenses for airlines, the impact has been immediate and significant.
In addition to fuel costs, easyJet has also faced higher legal provisions, further weighing on its financial performance. The company indicated that it incurred tens of millions of pounds in extra costs during March alone due to these combined pressures.
The broader aviation sector is feeling similar effects, with airlines worldwide adjusting ticket prices, scaling back expansion plans, and revising financial forecasts. The current environment underscores the vulnerability of the industry to external shocks, particularly those tied to geopolitical instability and energy markets.
As uncertainty persists, airlines like easyJet are expected to continue navigating a challenging landscape, balancing operational demands with volatile costs and shifting market conditions.
