Earthquake of magnitude 5.8 strikes southwest of Crete, Greece
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck southern Greece on Saturday, shaking areas southwest of the island of Crete, according to seismological monitoring agencies.
The quake was recorded at a depth of approximately 13 kilometres and was located about 69 kilometres south-southwest of the city of Rethymno, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
Authorities reported no immediate damage or casualties following the seismic event. However, local monitoring services continue to assess the situation as aftershocks remain possible in the region.
Greece lies in one of Europe’s most active seismic zones due to the interaction between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. The island of Crete, in particular, frequently experiences moderate to strong earthquakes, though most do not result in significant damage.
Emergency services remain on alert, while residents in the affected areas were briefly shaken but continued normal activity after the tremor passed.
