Dutch police recover 2,500 year old golden helmet stolen from museum
Dutch authorities have recovered the Coțofenești golden helmet more than 14 months after it was stolen in a high-profile museum heist in the Netherlands. Two of the three gold Dacian bracelets taken during the same robbery have also been found, while the search for the third continues.
Prosecutors presented the 2,500-year-old artifact during a press conference under heavy police security. Dutch police official Corien Fahner said investigators were pleased with the outcome. Art detective Arthur Brand confirmed the recovery, calling it the best possible result after months of uncertainty.
The helmet, dating back to the 5th century BC, is considered one of Romania’s most important cultural treasures. It had been on loan from the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest for an exhibition in the Netherlands.
The theft took place on January 25, 2025, at the Drents Museum in Assen. A group of thieves used improvised explosives to breach a side entrance before smashing display cases and fleeing with the artifacts. The suspects escaped in a stolen vehicle later found burned several kilometers away.
The stolen items were part of a traveling exhibition titled “Dacia: Kingdom of Gold and Silver,” which was due to close the following day. The helmet alone had been insured for €4.3 million and holds deep historical value linked to the ancient Dacian civilization.
The robbery triggered strong reactions in the international art world and strained diplomatic ties between the Netherlands and Romania.
Police arrested three suspects from a town near Amsterdam within days of the theft, followed by additional arrests in subsequent months. Dutch prosecutors later indicated that intercepted communications suggested the artifacts had not been melted down and remained intact.
Investigators and intermediaries worked to encourage the suspects to return the items. Romania had already received €5.7 million in insurance compensation for the stolen objects in September 2025. Authorities said the recovered helmet shows minor damage.
The case marks a major recovery in the fight against art theft and highlights the continued vulnerability of cultural heritage in international exhibitions.
