Czech coalition plans partial defunding of public media
The ruling coalition in the Czech Republic has announced plans to partially reduce funding for public television and radio later this year. The proposal aims to exempt senior citizens, young people, and companies from paying the monthly user fees that finance public media.
The coalition, formed by Prime Minister Andrej Babis’ ANO party, the far-right SPD, and the eurosceptic Motorists party, indicated that this measure is a preliminary step toward fully integrating public media financing into the state budget.
Critics, including journalists and press groups, have warned that such cuts could threaten the independence and quality of public media services. Czech Television and Czech Radio play a significant role in the country's media landscape, with Czech Television alone claiming a 29% share among viewers aged 15 and over.
