China sanctions social media platforms for overexposure of celebrity content
Chinese authorities have announced disciplinary measures against the social media platforms Weibo and Kuaishou, accusing them of excessively promoting celebrity-related news and “undesirable” content. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said the companies failed to fulfill their primary responsibility of monitoring and managing online information.
According to the CAC, sanctions include official summons for interviews, orders to correct violations within a specified timeframe, formal warnings, and strict penalties against certain executives.
The regulator criticized the platforms’ trending topic functions, which often highlight content linked to celebrity lifestyles or trivial posts, placing them prominently in search rankings. Officials argue that such practices harm the online ecosystem and contribute to the spread of vulgar, pornographic, or otherwise harmful material.
Last week, the CAC announced similar sanctions against RedNote, a Chinese equivalent of Instagram, underlining Beijing’s determination to keep tighter control over online content and limit what it sees as the “over-commercialization” of celebrity culture.
