Chefchaouen: Morocco’s Blue Jewel Ranked Among World's Most Beautiful Cities

Chefchaouen, the enchanting blue city nestled in the mountains of northern Morocco, has been honored by Architectural Digest (AD) as the 8th most beautiful city in the world. This accolade, published in a recent article by the prestigious international design magazine, places Chefchaouen among the globe's most captivating urban landscapes.

AD's list of the 20 most beautiful cities in the world reflects a diverse array of spectacular destinations, evaluated based on architecture, cultural significance, historical heritage, and natural beauty. The magazine underscored that the most remarkable cities offer unique experiences that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

Chefchaouen’s allure is undeniable. AD eloquently noted, “Few cities can inspire a traveler to book a trip based on a single photo, but Chefchaouen, the northern Morocco mountain town bathed in blue, is one of those places.”

The city’s signature blue hue has deep historical roots. According to AD, “In the 15th century, Jewish refugees fleeing the Spanish Inquisition painted the buildings blue as a reminder of the heavens and God's power above. In the subsequent centuries, residents have maintained this vibrant tradition.”

The beauty of Chefchaouen stands alongside other stunning cities such as Adelaide in Australia, Tallinn in Estonia, and Portsmouth in Dominica, which claimed the top three spots respectively. New York City also featured in the list, lauded for its iconic skyline and expansive green spaces.

This recognition is not a first for Chefchaouen. In July 2023, Architectural Digest showcased the city in an article titled “7 Striking Monochromatic Cities Around the World,” where Chefchaouen was highlighted as the third most impressive single-toned town. The piece celebrated the city’s unwavering dedication to its blue palette, which adorns everything from street facades to the winding staircases within its quaint alleyways.

Chefchaouen’s consistent acknowledgment by Architectural Digest underscores its status as a must-visit destination for travelers seeking beauty and cultural depth. This blue jewel of Morocco continues to captivate hearts and inspire wanderlust worldwide.
