Mystery deepens: No word yet on missing Moroccan truckers in West Africa
Four Moroccan truck drivers who disappeared on Saturday between Dore, Burkina Faso, and Tera, Niger, remain unaccounted for despite unconfirmed reports of their release. Mustapha Chaoune, Secretary General of Morocco's Democratic Organization of Multimodal Transport and Logistics, stated Monday that there has been no official confirmation of the drivers' status.
While numerous professionals from Burkina Faso, Niger, and Cote d'Ivoire have reported the truckers' release, these claims remain unverified by Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its embassies in Niger and Burkina Faso. Chaoune has been closely monitoring the situation alongside representatives from the AU for Transport and Logistics organizations in Burkina Faso and the Moroccan Embassy.
The disappearance occurs amid growing security concerns in the Sahel region, where terror groups maintain an active presence. This incident follows a recent attack in Nioro du Sahel, Mali, where terrorists targeted several locations in the city, resulting in minor damage to two Moroccan trucks. During that incident, the Moroccan embassy in Bamako confirmed all drivers emerged unharmed, despite some vehicles sustaining light damage.
The case has drawn significant attention from regional stakeholders, with Chaoune maintaining direct communication with various authorities and organizations involved in the search efforts. As officials continue their investigation, the fate of the four truckers remains uncertain, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by commercial vehicles operating in the Sahel region.
