Canada says it is reviewing ties with Israel after airstrikes in Doha
Canada announced on Wednesday that it is “reviewing” its relationship with Israel following what it described as “unacceptable” airstrikes in Doha targeting Hamas members. Foreign Minister Anita Anand stressed that the attacks represented a violation of Qatari airspace at a time when Doha was mediating for peace in the region.
Speaking from Edmonton, Anand reiterated that Canada’s priority is to promote peace in the Middle East and to address the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza. She also reminded reporters that Ottawa is preparing to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly later this month — a diplomatic shift firmly opposed by Israel.
The announcement comes amid growing international criticism of Israel. On the same day, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed sanctions against what she called “extremist” Israeli ministers, as well as a partial suspension of the EU-Israel association agreement.
