Brazilian drugmaker EMS plans international expansion after buying Sanofi’s Medley unit
Brazilian pharmaceutical company EMS is seeking to expand its international presence following the acquisition of the Brazil-based Sanofi unit, Medley, for more than $500 million. The deal strengthens EMS’s leadership position in Latin America’s generics market and positions the company for future growth abroad.
Thiago Tavares, CEO of Grupo NC Holding, stated in an interview that EMS is exploring additional acquisitions in Brazil, Mexico, and Eastern Europe. He also highlighted plans to expand operations beyond Latin America, aiming to establish a stronger global footprint.
EMS is preparing to launch its own semaglutide-based injector pens in Brazil, targeting the growing market for diabetes and obesity treatments. Tavares emphasized that the acquisition of Medley was financed using EMS’s own capital and opens opportunities for further strategic deals.
Looking forward, EMS plans to strengthen its presence in the United States, where the company already maintains a pre-operational unit, with a view to expanding after 2030. The company’s leadership sees international acquisitions as a key part of its strategy to become a more global pharmaceutical player.
