Brahim Diaz's Moroccan Heritage Inspires Allegiance to Atlas Lions
In an intimate interview, Dolores Bueno Bravo, the Moroccan grandmother of Spanish-born footballer Brahim Diaz, sheds light on her grandson's decision to represent the Moroccan national team, the Atlas Lions. With heartfelt pride, Bravo reveals that Diaz's Moroccan lineage, tracing back to his father and herself, significantly influenced his choice to wear the prestigious red jersey.
"Spain has beckoned him, but he's opting for Morocco; his father and I hail from there," Bravo confided in the Spanish media outlet ElDesmarque, highlighting the emotional tug-of-war Diaz endured for months as he navigated his dual nationality.
Bravo's unwavering support for her grandson's decision resonates through her declaration, "Now I stand with Morocco, supporting him wherever he goes." Her words echo the profound bond that transcends borders, emphasizing the power of familial ties and cultural identity.
Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of the Spanish national team, graciously acknowledges Diaz's choice, stating, "I respect his decision; everyone has the freedom to choose." De la Fuente further delves into the intricate selection process, recognizing the interplay between national eligibility, player preference, and the coach's ultimate decision.
Diaz, the 24-year-old attacking midfielder, is set to feature in the Moroccan national team squad list on March 14, marking his debut in the iconic Atlas Lions jersey during the upcoming friendly matches against Angola and Mauritania on March 22 and 26, respectively, at the Adrar stadium in Agadir.
Born to a Spanish mother and Moroccan father, Diaz's football journey has seen him traverse prestigious European clubs, including Manchester City, AC Milan, and currently, Real Madrid, where he has amassed an impressive tally of 8 goals and 4 assists in 32 appearances this season.
As Diaz prepares to embrace his Moroccan heritage on the international stage, his grandmother's heartfelt words serve as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of family and cultural legacy, transcending the boundaries of nation and sport.
