Biden's Claim of Palestinian Support Sparks Controversy Amid Gaza Crisis

In a recent interview, US President Joe Biden's assertion that he has been "very supportive" of Palestinians and has "done more for the Palestinian community than anybody" has ignited fierce debate. These remarks, made against the backdrop of ongoing devastation in Gaza, have drawn widespread criticism and skepticism from Palestinian rights advocates and humanitarian observers.

Biden's comments came in the wake of several deadly Israeli attacks on Gaza, including a bombing of a school housing displaced people in the Nuseirat area, which resulted in 17 civilian deaths and numerous injuries. This incident, along with other mass-casualty events, has become a grim reality for Gaza's residents over the past nine months.

The US president highlighted his efforts to open up assets, facilitate the opening of the Egyptian border, and coordinate Arab states' assistance in providing food and shelter to Palestinians. However, these claims have been met with disbelief and anger by many who point to the mounting death toll and destruction in Gaza, largely carried out with US-supplied weaponry.

Palestinian American activist Amer Zahr described Biden's comments as potentially "arrogant, blind, or deceitful," suggesting that the president seemed to want credit for both "enabling the genocide and for letting Palestinians have a little bit of medicine, water, and food."

The controversy surrounding Biden's remarks is further compounded by his reaffirmation of identifying as a Zionist. He defined Zionism as the belief that Israel should be a safe haven for Jews due to their history of persecution. This stance has drawn criticism from those who argue that Zionism has led to the displacement and oppression of Palestinians.

Biden's assertion that "every Jew in the world would be at risk" without Israel has also raised eyebrows. Eva Borgwardt, spokesperson for IfNotNow, a progressive Jewish-American group, expressed concern that such statements could be interpreted as perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Jewish loyalty.

The president's unwavering support for Israel has created political challenges within his own party, particularly among young voters, progressives, and Arab and Muslim Americans. His recent claim that the US is only sending defensive weapons to Israel has been disputed, with reports confirming continued transfers of offensive weaponry.

Critics argue that Biden's policies have contributed to the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Hatem Abudayyeh, chair of the US Palestinian Community Network, stated that Biden "could stop this genocide today by turning off the tap of unlimited funds and weapons to Israel."

As the conflict in Gaza continues and the death toll rises above 38,000, Biden's assertion of being supportive of Palestinians stands in stark contrast to the reality on the ground. The disconnect between the president's words and the ongoing humanitarian crisis has intensified calls for a reevaluation of US policy in the region.

This controversy underscores the complex and contentious nature of US involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As the debate rages on, the international community watches closely, questioning the role of US foreign policy in shaping the future of the region and the lives of those caught in the crossfire.
