Australia’s Glenn ‘Big Show’ Maxwell retires from ODIs

Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, aged 36, has decided to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) after featuring in 149 matches and scoring 3,990 runs. He cited the physical demands of the 50-over format as a key factor in his decision.

Maxwell, affectionately called “Big Show” for his entertaining and dynamic style, shared that he felt his body was struggling to keep up, which affected his performance. After discussing with the selection chairman George Bailey, Maxwell expressed his belief that it was time to step aside and allow younger players to take his place, especially with the 2027 World Cup in mind.

His final ODI appearance was during Australia’s semi-final loss to India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, a match after which veteran Steve Smith also retired from ODIs.

Known for a powerful strike rate of 126.70, Maxwell ranks second highest in ODI cricket. He has scored four centuries and 23 fifties, and taken 77 wickets with his off-spin bowling. One of his most iconic moments came during the 2023 World Cup in Mumbai, where he scored a remarkable 201 runs under extreme pressure and physical discomfort to guide Australia to victory from a precarious position.

Maxwell was a key contributor to Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup wins. George Bailey praised him as one of the most exciting players in the one-day game, highlighting his natural talent, fielding energy, bowling skills, and dedication to the national team.

Though Maxwell is stepping away from ODIs, he will continue to play T20 internationals, where he is expected to be a vital player as Australia prepares for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
