Anouar Sabri: “Aziz Akhannouch’s departure is an organized transition”

Anouar Sabri: “Aziz Akhannouch’s departure is an organized transition”

The departure of Aziz Akhannouch from the presidency of the Rassemblement National des Indépendants (RNI) continues to fuel analysis of Morocco’s political landscape. While the Prime Minister remains at the helm of the executive, this internal change within the ruling party has sparked a broader debate on the balance of the government majority and political prospects ahead of upcoming elections.

This issue was at the center of discussions on the television program Frontales broadcast on Medi1TV.

A political debate at the heart of frontales

Guests on the show, Anouar Sabri, RNI deputy, and Ahmed El Mehdi Mezouari, member of the political bureau of the Union Socialiste des Forces Populaires (USFP), discussed the implications of this leadership change within the majority party.

During the program, the participants addressed potential consequences of this transition on the cohesion of the government majority and the overall national political dynamic.

“An organized transition,” according to Anouar Sabri

For Anouar Sabri, Aziz Akhannouch’s decision to step down as RNI president should not be interpreted as a sign of political instability.

“This is an organized transition that does not undermine the party’s balance,” he explained, emphasizing that the RNI now has a structured organization capable of ensuring continuity in its political action.

The deputy also stressed that this decision does not signal a political withdrawal by the Prime Minister.

“Aziz Akhannouch remains Prime Minister and a member of the RNI political bureau. He therefore continues to play a full role in leading government action,” he clarified.

A separation between governmental and party responsibilities

According to the RNI deputy, distinguishing between government duties and party leadership could represent a positive evolution in political functioning.

“This separation can provide clearer visibility of political action and strengthen the institutional functioning of the party,” he noted.

Anouar Sabri also highlighted that the RNI has gradually structured itself in recent years around a more institutionalized approach.

“The party has equipped itself with organizational tools and management mechanisms that now allow it to ensure the continuity of its political project,” he added.

A majority still in place

Asked about the impact of this transition on the governing coalition, the deputy stated that the political balance remains stable.

“The majority continues to function. Parliamentary equilibrium is maintained, and no partner has left the coalition,” he affirmed.

He added that occasional differences between parties are a normal part of coalition functioning and do not undermine the shared government project.

A political scene in motion

With a few months remaining before the next elections, political parties are gradually entering a phase of strategic repositioning. Debates over alliances and political balances are expected to intensify in the coming months.

In this context, the transition within the RNI is part of a broader sequence of reconfiguration of Morocco’s partisan landscape.
