Algeria summons French chargé d’affaires after France 2 broadcast
Algeria has summoned the French chargé d’affaires in Algiers following the broadcast of a television program on France 2 that addressed the ongoing diplomatic crisis between the two countries. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the move was intended to formally protest the content of the program.
In an official statement, the ministry described the report as containing numerous inaccuracies and accused it of targeting the Algerian state, its institutions, and national symbols. Algerian authorities also criticized the participation of France’s ambassador to Algeria, Stéphane Romatet, who currently operates from Paris after leaving the country amid a prolonged bilateral dispute.
The program revisited France’s decision in mid-2024 to support Morocco’s autonomy plan for Moroccan Sahara, a position that prompted Algeria to recall its ambassador from Paris. Algeria backs the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for the disputed territory and opposes Morocco’s claims.
According to comments aired during the broadcast, this shift in France’s position marked a decisive break in relations between the Algerian and French leaderships. The episode highlights the persistent strain on ties between Algiers and Paris, which have remained tense for more than a year.
