Airbus partners with French startup Alta Ares to develop counter-drone defence systems

European aerospace giant Airbus has announced a partnership with French defence startup Alta Ares to develop and integrate counter-drone technologies, as demand for advanced air defence systems continues to rise across Europe and beyond.

The agreement, signed through Airbus’ Defence and Space division, is a non-binding memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation in the development of European solutions to counter emerging aerial threats.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of drones in modern conflicts, particularly highlighted by the war in Ukraine, where unmanned aerial systems have played a strategic role on the battlefield. European security officials have also raised concerns about potential airspace violations and hostile drone activity linked to broader geopolitical tensions.

Alta Ares, a French startup specializing in AI-based defence technologies, develops interceptor systems designed to detect, track, and neutralize hostile drones. The company has stated that its systems are already being used by Ukrainian forces and have been deployed in regions including the Middle East and parts of Asia.

The partnership reflects a broader push within Europe to strengthen defence capabilities in response to evolving security threats. The European Commission has previously outlined initiatives aimed at building a coordinated EU-wide strategy to counter drone incursions and enhance airspace protection.

Alta Ares recently raised €50 million in funding during its second investment round, highlighting strong investor interest in defence technologies driven by artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.

Airbus said the collaboration aims to support the development and integration of next-generation counter-drone solutions, leveraging both industrial expertise and startup innovation within the European defence ecosystem.

Analysts note that partnerships between major aerospace companies and emerging defence tech firms are becoming increasingly important as European countries seek to modernize their military capabilities and respond to rapidly changing warfare technologies.
