6.5-Magnitude Earthquake strikes guadeloupe

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Guadeloupe on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake’s epicenter was located about four miles east of Beauséjour, at a depth of 10 kilometers (around 6.2 miles). The USGS reported 27 public responses from people who felt the tremor shortly after it occurred.

Authorities confirmed there was no tsunami warning, advisory, or threat issued following the event.

“Based on all available data, there is no significant tsunami threat from this earthquake,” the U.S. Tsunami Warning System said in a statement, adding that “there is a very small possibility of local tsunami waves near the epicenter.”

Guadeloupe, located in the Caribbean, is prone to seismic activity, recording 19 earthquakes in the past year. The strongest quake in its history occurred on February 8, 1843, with a magnitude of 8.5, which caused 1,500 to 5,000 deaths.
