19-years-old candidate ends 43-years mayoral era in French municipal election
A 19-years-old candidate has brought an end to a 43-year political era in the southern French town of Roquefort-les-Pins, marking a significant shift in local leadership. Ewan Corinaldesi narrowly defeated longtime mayor Michel Rossi, winning by just 39 votes in a closely contested municipal election.
Corinaldesi secured just over half of the vote, reflecting a desire for change among residents after more than four decades of continuous leadership under Rossi, who had held office since 1983. The result highlights the growing role of younger candidates in local politics and the increasing willingness of voters to embrace new leadership.
Voter turnout was relatively strong for a town of around 7,000 inhabitants, with more than 64% of registered voters casting their ballots. The newly elected mayor’s list also gained a clear majority in the municipal council, strengthening his ability to implement his agenda.
This election result illustrates a broader trend in democratic systems, where generational renewal and political diversity are reshaping local governance. Corinaldesi’s victory symbolizes both a break from the past and a new chapter for the community.
