Rouen Cathedral Engulfed in Flames: Historic Gothic Landmark Faces Peril
On Thursday, a fire erupted in the spire of the renowned Rouen Cathedral, a medieval Gothic masterpiece in the city of Rouen, northwest France. "The fire broke out at the tip of the spire, which isn't made of wood, but rather metal," the prefecture of the Seine-Maritime department told AFP news agency. Gouezec further reassured that the risk of the fire spreading was relatively low, as it was concentrated in an area predominantly composed of metal.
The cathedral was quickly evacuated, and a security perimeter was established as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. Local mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol took to social media, stating, "The beginning of a fire is underway on the spire of Rouen cathedral. Origin unknown at this stage. All public resources are mobilized."
